Reps propose N10m fine, two-year jail term for dual party membership

Two years jail term for dual party

The House of Representatives has proposed a N10 million fine and a maximum two-year jail term for individuals found guilty of belonging to more than one political party at the same time.

The provision is contained in an amendment to the Electoral Act 2026 passed by the Green Chamber during plenary on Wednesday.

Lawmakers said the amendment is aimed at curbing the growing trend of political actors maintaining multiple party affiliations, a practice they noted undermines party discipline and weakens Nigeria’s democratic process.

Under the new provision, any person discovered to be a member of more than one political party simultaneously would be liable to a fine of up to N10 million, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

The House explained that the measure seeks to strengthen accountability within the country’s political system and promote transparency in party membership.

The amendment forms part of broader legislative efforts by the National Assembly to reform Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future elections.
