NiMet Partners REX Insurance to Shield Nigerian Farmers from Climate Losses

Climate Risks in Agriculture: NiMet Signs Deal with REX Insurance to Support Farmers

By Juliet Ezeh

Thousands of Nigerian farmers who struggle each year with unpredictable weather conditions may soon get a new safety net as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and REX Insurance Limited have agreed to introduce weather-based insurance solutions aimed at reducing the risks faced by farmers.

The initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both organisations, is designed to protect farmers against climate-related disasters such as floods, droughts and irregular rainfall patterns that often lead to crop failures.

For many farmers across Nigeria, changing weather patterns have become one of the biggest threats to agricultural productivity, wiping out months of hard work and investments. The proposed weather index insurance scheme is expected to provide financial support when extreme weather events affect crop yields.

Speaking during the agreement ceremony, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, said the agency’s extensive meteorological data and forecasting systems would play a critical role in developing reliable insurance products tailored for the agricultural sector.

According to him, NiMet has over a century of experience in weather observation and climate monitoring in Nigeria, which positions the agency to provide accurate weather data needed to support innovative risk-management tools for farmers.

He explained that agriculture remains one of the sectors most exposed to the impacts of climate change, making it necessary to introduce protective mechanisms that can help farmers recover from weather-induced losses.

Industry analysts say weather index insurance is increasingly being adopted globally as a strategy to cushion farmers against climate shocks. Unlike traditional insurance, the scheme uses weather data such as rainfall levels or temperature thresholds to determine payouts when adverse conditions occur.

Officials say the collaboration between NiMet and REX Insurance is expected to expand access to insurance services in rural farming communities and encourage farmers to continue investing in agricultural production despite growing climate uncertainties.

The partnership is also seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s food security by ensuring that farmers have financial protection against environmental risks that could disrupt harvests and supply chains.
