The African Democratic Congress (ADC) raised concerns over what it described as prolonged detention without due process, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party questioned the legality of holding a citizen for over 30 days without formal charges or arraignment in court.

El-Rufai was initially invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before being taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he has remained.

The situation has raised broader concerns among political observers and legal analysts about compliance with constitutional provisions guaranteeing personal liberty and fair hearing.

According to the ADC, the case reflects deeper issues surrounding the use of investigative and enforcement agencies, particularly in politically sensitive matters.

The party argued that prolonged detention without clear legal proceedings could set a troubling precedent for civil liberties and political participation.

El-Rufai is currently facing multiple investigations, including allegations of financial mismanagement during his tenure as governor, as well as cybercrime-related charges linked to statements made during a media interview.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has also filed charges related to alleged unauthorised access to sensitive communications.

Despite the ongoing investigations, the ADC insisted that due process must be followed, either through formal arraignment or release, in line with constitutional provisions.

Legal experts note that the case highlights the delicate balance between anti-corruption efforts and the protection of individual rights, especially in high-profile political cases.

The development continues to generate public interest, with calls for transparency and strict adherence to the law as investigations proceed.
