The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reiterated its commitment to the welfare and safety of corps members, emphasizing that all participants in the scheme are covered by a comprehensive insurance package that includes both life and health benefits throughout their service year.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during a visit by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Jibrin Ndace, in Abuja.
According to Nafiu, the insurance framework ensures that corps members receive medical attention when needed, with additional government-backed interventions available in exceptional cases that fall outside standard health coverage. He explained that the scheme has been designed to guarantee that corps members are supported from the moment they receive their call-up letters until the completion of their service year.
The NYSC leadership noted that the welfare structure includes collaboration with national health systems to provide access to treatment, while also maintaining emergency support mechanisms for critical situations. Over the years, the scheme has reportedly stepped in to assist corps members facing serious medical challenges, reinforcing its safety net approach.
Beyond insurance, Nafiu highlighted that corps members are strategically deployed across the country to support national development in sectors such as education, healthcare, and public service delivery. He explained that the posting process is structured to ensure equitable distribution of manpower across states while aligning with national priorities.
He further addressed concerns around misinformation, urging media organizations to verify reports with the NYSC before publication to avoid spreading inaccurate information about the scheme’s operations and policies.
The NYSC boss also emphasized that corps members are not deployed to insecure areas, noting that their safety remains a key consideration in deployment decisions. He added that the scheme operates on principles of neutrality, maintaining its non-political and non-religious stance to foster unity among young Nigerians.
The visit by the Voice of Nigeria leadership also opened discussions on potential collaboration between both organizations, particularly in content development and youth-focused programming aimed at highlighting the contributions of corps members both locally and internationally.
Ndace, in his remarks, commended the NYSC leadership for its management approach and expressed readiness to strengthen media partnerships that would showcase the activities and impact of the corps to a wider global audience.
The renewed focus on corps members’ welfare underscores ongoing efforts by the NYSC to enhance service conditions, improve safety measures, and maintain its relevance as a national integration program while supporting youth development across Nigeria.
