The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the Federal Government to immediately begin payment under the newly approved lecturer salary structure, or risk a nationwide strike.
ASUU President Christopher Piwuna issued the four-day ultimatum on Thursday while speaking at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State. He cautioned that failure to comply would force the union to take decisive action that could shut down public universities across the country.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to commence payment of the new salary structure. Any delay will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna said.
The union emphasized that prompt action is expected, warning that inaction would trigger serious measures affecting universities nationwide.
This warning comes months after ASUU and the federal government reached a new agreement in January to resolve recurring disputes and prevent repeated strikes. The agreement includes a revised salary structure aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare and addressing unresolved issues from the 2009 ASUU-government agreement.
