The All Progressives Congress on Friday elected a new set of National Working Committee members at its 8th National Convention held in Abuja, with Nentawe Yilwatda and Surajudeen Basiru emerging unopposed.
The election, conducted at Eagle Square, followed the party’s adoption of a consensus arrangement, which saw all positions filled without contest, as announced by the convention’s election committee.
The gathering attracted key figures within the party and government, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, alongside governors, lawmakers, and delegates nationwide.
Activities at the convention included the presentation and adoption of reports from ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses. The previous party executives were also formally dissolved before the emergence of the new leadership.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu described the convention as a significant milestone for both the party and Nigeria’s democratic process, highlighting what he called sustained unity within the APC.
He defended his administration’s policies, stating that ongoing economic reforms are beginning to show positive outcomes, while assuring that his government remains focused on national development despite criticisms.
The President also reiterated the importance of a vibrant opposition in strengthening democracy and pledged continued commitment to credible elections under the current electoral framework.
Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Aminu Bello Masari, said the exercise reflects the party’s resolve to deepen internal cohesion and promote inclusive governance.
He urged members to remain committed to the party’s vision, describing the convention as a strategic step towards consolidating its structure ahead of future political engagements.
The event concluded with the formal announcement of results and an acceptance speech by the newly elected national chairman, as the party signalled readiness to strengthen its leadership and advance its policy direction in the coming years.
