In a major political development, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stepped down from his ministerial role as he prepares to vie for the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections.

A source close to Tuggar revealed that his resignation, which will be formally submitted to President Bola Tinubu, is in compliance with electoral regulations ahead of the forthcoming party primaries.

“The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed,” said Ministry Spokesman Kimiebi Ebienfa, validating the political move.

This decision follows a directive by President Tinubu instructing all political appointees interested in elective offices to resign by March 31, 2026. The order, issued through a circular from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, adheres to Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and aligns with the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.

Political analysts note that Tuggar is among several presidential appointees expected to leave their posts as they prepare to contest in the 2027 general elections. This move highlights the strategic reshuffling within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as party members position themselves ahead of next year’s polls.

Tuggar’s resignation marks a significant step in his political journey, signaling the start of what promises to be a highly contested race for the Bauchi governorship seat.
