Amid growing economic pressure on households, the Federal Government says over 9.2 million Nigerians have received direct cash support totaling N688 billion under its Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer (HOPE-CT) Programme.

The initiative, introduced as a response to the impact of economic reforms, delivers N75,000 to vulnerable households in three phases, providing immediate relief for basic needs such as feeding, medical care, and schooling.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, described the programme as one of the government’s largest social protection efforts in recent years.

He disclosed that about 9.17 million beneficiaries have received the first N25,000 tranche, while over 7.2 million and 6.4 million households have accessed the second and third payments respectively.

According to him, the phased disbursement system ensures wider coverage while maintaining accountability. “Every eligible household will receive its full entitlement as processing continues nationwide,” he assured.

The scheme is driven by data from the National Social Register and supported by identity verification systems to reduce fraud and improve targeting.

The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission, Dr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said over 13.2 million records were submitted for verification, with more than 11.8 million successfully cleared.

She noted that rejected entries are not failures but part of efforts to strengthen transparency and ensure only genuine beneficiaries are captured.

A gender breakdown of the data shows that women make up the majority of recipients, accounting for nearly 59 per cent of total beneficiaries—highlighting their critical role in sustaining households during tough economic times.

Also speaking, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the programme reflects the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens and restoring confidence in public interventions.

Funded through an $800 million facility from the World Bank’s International Development Association, the programme is now being expanded, with the target increased to 15 million Nigerians.

Officials say beyond immediate relief, the HOPE-CT initiative is laying the foundation for stronger social protection, improved financial inclusion, and a more transparent welfare system in Nigeria.
