The Nigerian Senate has called on the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to urgently investigate the March 29 killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 28 civilians lost their lives.
In a resolution passed on Tuesday, senators demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators, while pledging to send a delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to console victims’ families and residents affected by the violence.
The motion, sponsored by Senators Diket Plang (APC Plateau Central) and Dachung Mwadkon (APC Plateau North), highlighted worsening insecurity in Plateau, including earlier attacks in Kanam and ambushes targeting security patrols. Lawmakers warned that ongoing violence, intertwined with ethnic, religious, and economic tensions, is displacing farmers and threatening food security in the region.
Senators urged security agencies to adopt proactive measures, including establishing permanent bases in hotspots, enhancing intelligence gathering, and deploying aerial surveillance to counter armed groups. They also backed increased recruitment into the police and military to address manpower shortages.
Finally, the Senate called on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide emergency relief, including food, medical aid, and temporary shelters, to support displaced families. A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the victims.
