The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has begun a nationwide accessibility audit of Nigerian universities, starting with the Federal University Lafia (FULafia), to ensure that public institutions meet standards for persons with disabilities.
The initiative, in line with the Disability (Accessibility) Regulations 2023, is aimed at assessing university facilities and services for compliance with accessibility requirements. The audit team, led by Bitrus Sule Dakup, reviewed classrooms, administrative offices, libraries, and campus infrastructure to identify areas for improvement.
Receiving the team, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Ibrahim Hassan Ogiri praised NCPWD for choosing FULafia as the first institution for the exercise. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to inclusivity and partnership with the Commission.
The Head of the Centre for Disability Studies, Prof Adaka, assured full institutional support for accessibility improvements and inclusion initiatives.
On behalf of NCPWD, Dakup commended the university for providing an enabling environment for persons with disabilities and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to making Nigerian public institutions disability-friendly, in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
The audit marks a key step in promoting inclusivity and ensuring equal access to education for all students across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
