The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially handed over critical shoreline protection and land reclamation projects to host communities in Bayelsa State, marking a renewed push to safeguard vulnerable riverine areas from erosion and environmental degradation.

The projects, located in Onuebum and Ayakoro communities in Ogbia Local Government Area, are designed to combat worsening shoreline collapse while creating sustainable land for development.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Ayakoro, the NDDC Director for Bayelsa State, Godknows Alamieyeseigha, said the initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to protecting lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods across the Niger Delta.

He emphasized that involving host communities from the onset would ensure better project monitoring, transparency, and timely delivery.

“This project is not just about infrastructure; it is about securing the future of these communities,” he said, urging residents to take ownership and report any irregularities during execution.

The NDDC also highlighted that the formal handover model was introduced to prevent past conflicts caused by overlapping responsibilities among agencies, a challenge that previously stalled development projects in the region.

Deputy Director of Community and Rural Development, Diete Amiefamonyo, noted that community participation remains key to success. He called on youth groups, women leaders, and local committees to work together and avoid disrupting contractors.

Providing technical insight, Project Consultant Henry Okolie revealed that severe shoreline collapse along riverbanks had threatened both land and ongoing road infrastructure. He explained that modern reclamation technology would not only halt erosion but also expand usable land for economic activities.

Community leaders welcomed the intervention, pledging full cooperation to ensure the project is delivered on schedule.
