The Dangote Group has strongly denied viral social media claims alleging a rift between its president, Aliko Dangote, and Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu, describing the reports as completely false, misleading, and a product of digital misinformation spreading rapidly online.
In an official reaction released through its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, the conglomerate warned content creators, bloggers, and online platforms against the growing trend of circulating unverified information, especially AI-generated content that falsely references the company and its leadership.
The clarification comes after a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that Aliko Dangote had allegedly sought financial assistance from several top Nigerian business figures to complete the multi-billion-dollar Dangote Petroleum Refinery, one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.
The post further alleged that Tony Elumelu had pledged 20 million dollars but later cut off communication, while other prominent businessmen, including Mike Adenuga, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Femi Otedola, were said to have contributed large sums to the refinery project.
However, the Dangote Group has categorically dismissed all such claims, insisting that the narrative is entirely fabricated and bears no connection to reality.
“Completely False and Misleading” – Dangote Group Responds
In its statement, the company emphasized that neither Aliko Dangote nor the Dangote Group has ever issued such claims or engaged in any form of personal borrowing from friends or associates to finance the refinery.
“The Dangote Group categorically rejects claims that the development of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery was financed through personal borrowing from friends. These assertions are wholly inaccurate and constitute a deliberate misrepresentation of facts,” the statement read.
The company further stressed that Aliko Dangote has never relied on informal financial arrangements to fund his large-scale industrial projects, noting that such claims are inconsistent with how the group operates.
“As a matter of principle, Aliko Dangote neither finances his projects through personal borrowing from friends nor engages in lending arrangements of that nature. Any individual making such claims should provide verifiable evidence to substantiate them,” it added.
No Rift Between Dangote and Elumelu
Beyond the funding allegations, the viral post also suggested tension between Aliko Dangote and Tony Elumelu, two of Africa’s most prominent business leaders.
The Dangote Group has firmly dismissed this narrative, describing it as completely unfounded and misleading.
“Equally false are suggestions of any estrangement between Aliko Dangote and Mr Tony Elumelu, with whom he maintains a longstanding and cordial relationship,” the company stated.
Both business moguls have long been publicly associated with efforts to strengthen Africa’s private sector, industrial growth, and investment landscape, often appearing at global economic forums and business events.
Rising Threat of Misinformation in Business Reporting
The incident highlights the increasing challenge of misinformation and AI-generated content in today’s digital ecosystem, where viral posts can quickly shape public perception before facts are verified.
In recent years, social media platforms have become breeding grounds for unverified financial claims, fabricated interviews, and manipulated narratives involving high-profile individuals and corporations.
Industry analysts warn that such misinformation not only damages reputations but can also mislead investors, affect market sentiment, and distort public understanding of major economic projects.
The Dangote Group’s strong rebuttal reflects a growing concern among large corporations about the speed and scale at which false narratives spread online.
Dangote Refinery Remains a Landmark Project
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, remains one of the most ambitious private-sector industrial projects in Africa.
With a refining capacity designed to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products, the project has been widely described as a game changer for the continent’s energy sector.
Despite occasional speculation and online commentary, the project has consistently been presented by the Dangote Group as being funded through structured financing arrangements involving global financial institutions, rather than informal personal borrowing.
The company’s latest statement reinforces that position, aiming to correct what it calls “deliberate misrepresentation of facts” circulating online.
Call for Responsibility in Digital Content Creation
The Dangote Group also issued a strong warning to bloggers, influencers, and online media platforms, urging them to exercise greater responsibility when sharing information about individuals and corporations.
It stressed that the rise of artificial intelligence tools has made it easier to generate convincing but false narratives, increasing the burden on media users to verify information before publication.
According to the group, failure to fact-check content not only spreads misinformation but also undermines trust in legitimate journalism and business reporting.
The statement serves as a reminder of the growing need for digital literacy, especially in an era where viral content often spreads faster than verified news.
Public Reaction and Online Debate
Following the viral post, social media platforms witnessed heated debates, with users divided over the authenticity of the claims. While some users questioned the credibility of the story from the outset, others engaged with the narrative before it was officially debunked.
This pattern reflects a broader trend in online spaces where sensational financial stories involving high-profile individuals often gain traction quickly, regardless of verification.
However, the swift response from the Dangote Group appears to have helped clarify the situation and limit further spread of the misinformation.
Final Clarification
Reiterating its position, the Dangote Group urged the public to disregard the viral claims in their entirety, describing them as baseless fabrications with no factual backing.
It also reaffirmed that Aliko Dangote maintains professional and cordial relationships with fellow business leaders, including Tony Elumelu, and that no conflict exists between them.
As misinformation continues to pose challenges in the digital age, the company’s response underscores the importance of verified reporting and responsible content sharing in maintaining public trust.
For now, the Dangote Group says its focus remains firmly on its industrial and economic contributions, particularly the continued development and operation of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a project widely seen as critical to Nigeria’s long-term energy independence.
