Tambuwal Steps Down from Sokoto Senate Race as ADC Picks Yabo, Dan’iya for 2027

Political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections have taken a new turn in Sokoto State, as Aminu Tambuwal has withdrawn from the Sokoto South Senatorial race.

Tambuwal’s exit from the contest has paved the way for the emergence of Faruk Yabo, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who has now been endorsed as the consensus senatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development signals a strategic shift within the party as it positions itself for a stronger showing in the state during the 2027 polls.

Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State, previously contested for the presidency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023. He later stepped down during the party’s primaries in support of Atiku Abubakar, the party’s eventual presidential candidate.

In a related development, the ADC has also settled for Manir Muhammad Dan’iya as its consensus governorship candidate in Sokoto State. Dan’iya previously served as deputy governor during Tambuwal’s administration.

A Calculated Political Move?

Political observers say the adoption of consensus candidates may be a deliberate strategy by the ADC to avoid internal disputes and strengthen party unity ahead of the elections.

The alignment of key political figures—many of whom share longstanding political relationships—suggests a coordinated effort to boost the party’s chances against more established rivals.

What This Means for Sokoto Politics

With both senatorial and governorship tickets now decided, focus is expected to shift toward grassroots mobilization and coalition-building across the state.

Analysts believe the ADC’s early preparations could significantly reshape the political landscape in Sokoto, especially if the party attracts new supporters and builds a strong pre-election structure.
