The Nigerian Railway Corporation has introduced enhanced safety measures on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor following a recent operational incident that disrupted services earlier this week.
Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said the upgrades were implemented after a technical fault involving a moving train raised concerns about passenger safety and system reliability.
The incident, which occurred on March 16 near Asham Station, involved a train travelling from Rigasa in Kaduna State to Abuja. A detached locomotive reportedly rolled forward and collided with the rear of the train, creating a serious operational disruption.
Although no fatalities were recorded among the 400-plus passengers on board, some individuals sustained injuries and were treated promptly before the journey resumed.
In response, the Nigerian Railway Corporation said it had reviewed its operational procedures and introduced additional safeguards aimed at preventing similar occurrences.
Opeifa noted that the corporation’s rapid intervention helped minimise the impact of the disruption, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high safety standards across the rail network.
Passengers have also been reassured of improved monitoring systems, better technical checks, and enhanced coordination among operational teams.
The corporation confirmed that services on the Abuja–Kaduna route have returned to normal, with authorities encouraging commuters to resume travel with confidence.
Rail transport remains a critical link between Abuja and Kaduna State, serving thousands of passengers daily and offering a safer alternative to road travel along the corridor.
Industry observers say the latest safety adjustments will be closely watched as the government continues efforts to strengthen public transport infrastructure and rebuild passenger trust in the rail system.
