Alleged Vehicle Hijacks by Lagos Task Force Raise Public Accountability Concerns

Lagos Police Launch Investigation as Viral Video

The Lagos State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into a viral video accusing officers of the Lagos State Task Force, led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, of allegedly hijacking vehicles and fabricating traffic offences to extort motorists.

The video, which circulated widely on social media on Saturday, shows a task force officer allegedly taking control of a driver’s vehicle, repositioning it on a one-way street to create false evidence of a traffic violation, and demanding payment from the motorist. In the recording, a male voice claimed to have paid ₦150,000 to avoid impoundment, suggesting that other victims face similar demands under duress.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the video’s circulation via its official X account and stated that Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh had directed an urgent investigation. The police assured the public that appropriate action would follow based on the probe’s findings.

Observers note that this incident is part of a broader wave of complaints regarding the conduct of the Lagos State Task Force under CSP Akerele. Earlier in March 2026, residents reported multiple cases of alleged aggressive enforcement tactics, including framing motorists after directing illegal manoeuvres and demanding cash to release impounded vehicles.

Experts warn that such incidents, whether proven or not, erode public trust in law enforcement, highlighting the need for systemic oversight and reforms. The case underscores the challenge of balancing strict traffic enforcement with accountability in Nigeria’s largest city, where traffic officers exercise considerable authority over motorists daily.

For Lagos residents, the ongoing investigation will serve as a test of transparency and integrity within the state police apparatus. The outcome could influence policy adjustments, officer training, and public reporting mechanisms aimed at preventing abuse of power and restoring citizens’ confidence in traffic enforcement.
