Residents of the Lekki corridor in Lagos State experienced moments of fear and disruption on Friday after a viral video surfaced online showing armed youths causing chaos along a major road, prompting a swift security response that led to the arrest of several suspected hoodlums.

The disturbing footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, captured scenes of panic along the busy Lekki axis. In the video, groups of young men were seen running aggressively across lanes and road medians while wielding machetes and cutlasses. Motorists were forced to make sudden detours to avoid being caught in the violence, while pedestrians fled in different directions to escape potential harm.

The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, caused significant alarm among residents and commuters who described the situation as both frightening and unexpected in one of Lagos’ most high-profile and heavily monitored districts. The Lekki corridor is known for its commercial activity, residential estates, and heavy traffic flow, making the reported breach of public order particularly concerning.

Following the circulation of the video, the Lagos State Police Command moved quickly to address public anxiety and confirm that steps had already been taken to restore calm in the area. In an official statement shared via its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the command assured residents that security operatives were fully on top of the situation.

According to the statement, police authorities were aware of the trending footage and had already initiated operational responses aimed at identifying and apprehending those involved. The command emphasized that necessary actions were being taken to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further disruption.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the trending video and wishes to inform the general public that it is presently on top of the situation, and necessary actions have been taken,” the statement read. The police further urged residents to remain calm, assuring that the situation had been brought under control.

Providing additional insight into the security response, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that a coordinated enforcement operation was launched shortly after the incident came to light.

Wahab explained that following reports and videos circulating online, security agencies carried out a targeted investigation along key points of the Lekki axis, including areas around Chisco and Osapa bus stops. The operation reportedly led to the identification and arrest of several suspected hoodlums believed to have participated in the disruption.

“Following the videos circulating online with reports of unrest in Lekki today, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police carried out a rapid investigation and launched a sting operation between the Chisco and Osapa axis. This led to the successful identification and arrest of a number of hoodlums,” he stated.

He further noted that the swift intervention was part of broader efforts by the state government and security agencies to maintain law and order across Lagos, especially in high-traffic and strategic urban areas. According to him, rapid response mechanisms have become critical in addressing emerging security threats before they escalate.

Wahab also reiterated assurances from the police leadership, noting that the Commissioner of Police had pledged continued protection for law-abiding residents. He emphasized that the safety of lives and property remains a top priority under the current security leadership in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police has assured law-abiding citizens that the security of their lives and properties is guaranteed under his watch,” he added.

The incident has since sparked renewed conversations among residents about urban security, emergency response effectiveness, and the growing role of social media in shaping public awareness of security threats. While some residents praised the rapid response of law enforcement agencies, others expressed concern about how such armed gatherings were able to temporarily disrupt a major route in a high-security zone.

Security analysts note that viral videos often accelerate police response times, as public pressure mounts quickly once incidents gain online attention. However, they also warn that misinformation or incomplete footage can sometimes amplify fear before facts are fully established.

As of the time of filing this report, calm has reportedly been restored in the Lekki area, with increased police presence deployed to prevent further disturbances. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the identities of all individuals involved and whether the incident is connected to any organized group or isolated criminal activity.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies, while reassurances continue to be issued that Lagos remains safe despite the brief disruption.
