The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Oko Chapter, has called on the Federal Government to reform Nigeria’s polytechnic system to strengthen youth employability and industrial productivity.

Speaking at the 2026 International Hybrid Conference themed “Recalibrating Polytechnic Education for Sustainable Development”, ASUP Chairman, Dr Fidelis Odua, highlighted the urgent need for updated curricula, improved funding, and practical skill development to meet the demands of Nigeria’s labour market.

Dr Odua emphasized that a revitalized polytechnic system would not only reduce youth unemployment but also enhance the country’s technological and industrial capacity. He urged the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to collaborate on policies that support polytechnic graduates and align training with industry needs.

Also addressing the conference, the Rector, Dr Chioma Awuzie, stressed that practical, skill-based education and private-sector partnerships are essential to preparing graduates for modern workforce challenges. Deputy Rector Dr Nkiruka Akabuike advocated for digital transformation through improved ICT infrastructure and industry collaboration.

The conference concluded with a plan to formally communicate policy recommendations to the Federal Government, aiming to elevate the status of polytechnic graduates and ensure reforms translate into tangible improvements for education and national development.
