Motorists in the bustling Computer Village area of Ikeja are facing increasing financial losses due to a growing network of illegal parking operators exploiting unsuspecting drivers.
The Lagos State Parking Authority has raised alarm over the situation, revealing that many drivers are unknowingly paying unauthorised fees to fraudsters, only to still face penalties from official enforcement teams.
According to the agency, some motorists have been forced to pay as much as ₦1,000 to individuals posing as parking attendants. However, these payments offer no legal protection, leaving vehicles vulnerable to sanctions such as clamping, number plate removal, or towing.
The General Manager of LASPA, Adebisi Adelabu, explained that the scam not only exploits drivers but also creates confusion around legitimate parking regulations in the area.
She emphasised that many victims end up paying twice—first to illegal collectors and later to government authorities enforcing proper parking rules.
The agency warned that the activities of these unauthorised operators are undermining efforts to maintain order in one of Lagos’ busiest commercial hubs.
Officials say enforcement operations have now been intensified across Ikeja, particularly in high-traffic zones such as the under-bridge and surrounding streets, where the illegal collections are most prevalent.
Motorists have been advised to verify the identity of any parking attendant before making payments and to insist on official receipts issued by authorised personnel.
The authority also called on the public to report suspicious individuals or groups, stressing that tackling the issue requires cooperation between residents, drivers, and law enforcement agencies.
As enforcement tightens, officials believe increased awareness among motorists will be key to dismantling the extortion network and restoring confidence in Lagos’ parking system.
