A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years imprisonment over a money laundering case involving N868.46 million.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution had successfully proven its case against the former public official, leading to his conviction on multiple counts.

The court ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented sufficient and credible evidence establishing that the funds were unlawfully handled, thereby securing the conviction.

The case, which has drawn significant public attention, highlights ongoing efforts to enforce accountability within Nigeria’s public financial management system.

Legal observers say the judgment sends a strong signal on the consequences of financial misconduct in public office, particularly for officials entrusted with overseeing national resources.

The conviction is also viewed as a boost to anti-corruption efforts, reinforcing the role of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in addressing financial crimes involving senior government officials.

With the ruling, attention is expected to shift toward strengthening oversight mechanisms and preventing similar cases in the future, as authorities continue to push for greater transparency and accountability in public service.
