Motorists travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway experienced severe traffic congestion on Sunday after a crash involving two trucks disrupted movement around the Arepo Bridge axis.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m. when an empty American Cola truck collided with a Seaco truck along the busy corridor, forcing vehicles to slow down and creating a backlog of traffic in the area.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident to manage traffic and coordinate the removal of the damaged vehicles blocking the road.
The obstruction on the roadway significantly affected early morning commuters and transport operators who rely on the expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest intercity routes connecting Lagos with several southwestern states and other parts of the country.
Witnesses at the scene said two drivers sustained injuries in the crash, with one reportedly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after suffering serious wounds, while the other driver sustained minor injuries.
A motorist who observed the aftermath of the collision suggested that debris or waste materials left on the roadway may have contributed to the accident, although authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps worked to restore normal traffic flow after the damaged trucks were gradually cleared from the road.
Road safety authorities have repeatedly warned motorists and transport operators about the dangers of speeding and poor road conditions, particularly along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which records frequent traffic incidents due to its heavy usage.
