The Federal Ministry of Education has intensified efforts to strengthen transparency in its procurement processes, warning officials involved in contract approvals to strictly comply with established government regulations.
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, issued the directive during a meeting of the Ministerial Tenders Board in Abuja, where procurement practices and oversight mechanisms were reviewed.
According to a statement released by the ministry, Enitan cautioned directors and board members against any actions that could undermine due process in the award and management of government contracts.
Strict Compliance With Procurement Law
The permanent secretary emphasised the need for strict adherence to the Public Procurement Act 2007 and other regulatory guidelines governing public procurement in Nigeria.
He noted that compliance with these regulations is essential for maintaining accountability in the management of public funds and ensuring that procurement activities are conducted transparently.
Professionalism Required in Contract Reviews
Enitan also urged members of the Ministerial Tenders Board to demonstrate professionalism, objectivity and diligence when reviewing procurement documents and memoranda submitted for approval.
The board plays a key role in ensuring that contracts awarded by the ministry meet all statutory requirements and follow due process.
Collaboration With Procurement Regulator
The permanent secretary further disclosed that recent discussions with the leadership of the Bureau of Public Procurement had reinforced the need for government institutions to fully comply with procurement regulations.
According to him, stronger oversight is necessary to prevent irregularities and promote integrity in public procurement processes.
Improved Documentation of Procurement Activities
As part of the reforms, Enitan directed the ministry’s Director of Procurement to ensure that all decisions and proceedings of the Ministerial Tenders Board are properly documented and endorsed.
He said maintaining accurate records is crucial for transparency and institutional accountability.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening procurement oversight while ensuring that public resources are managed responsibly in line with government regulations.
