The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an Abuja-based real estate agent, Hajia Adama Adamu, for allegedly defrauding a buyer of N288 million in a property scam.
According to a statement on the EFCC’s official X handle on Wednesday, operatives from the agency’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate apprehended Adamu following a petition filed by the victim, Alhaji Tanko Yawale.
The commission revealed that Adamu allegedly collected the money under the pretense of facilitating the purchase of a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja. After receiving the funds, the suspect reportedly failed to provide valid property documents, raising concerns that led to the formal complaint.
“Following the payment, Hajia Adamu allegedly failed to provide the complainant with valid documentation for the property and subsequently became evasive, prompting a petition to the EFCC,” the agency stated.
Property-related fraud continues to be a major issue in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in cities like Abuja, where buyers are often deceived by agents posing as legitimate intermediaries.
In recent months, the EFCC has intensified efforts to crack down on land and housing scams, urging the public to thoroughly verify property ownership and documentation before making any payments.
