The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled a nationwide security strategy aimed at preventing crime, ensuring public safety, and maintaining order during the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the immediate deployment of tactical units, intelligence operatives, and specialized squads across the country as part of proactive measures to secure Eid prayer grounds, highways, markets, and other high-traffic public spaces.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the police leadership emphasized that the initiative is not only a gesture of goodwill to Muslim faithful observing the festival but also a deliberate security response designed to mitigate potential threats that often accompany large public gatherings.

The directive reflects a shift toward intelligence-led and visibility-based policing, combining surveillance, coordinated patrols, and rapid response operations to strengthen security presence nationwide. Tactical teams and intelligence units are expected to be strategically positioned in key locations, while specialized squads such as the Special Intervention Squad will support operations in sensitive and high-risk areas.

Security analysts note that festive periods like Eid-el-Fitr typically witness increased human movement, crowded prayer grounds, heightened commercial activities, and interstate travel, all of which can create opportunities for petty crimes, traffic congestion, and other security challenges. The police deployment therefore aims to address these risks by maintaining a visible presence in public spaces, including highways, motor parks, recreational centres, and worship venues.

The Inspector-General also emphasized enhanced surveillance, coordinated patrols, and stop-and-search operations guided by intelligence to proactively deter criminal activities and ensure quick response to any emerging threats. The inclusion of major transit routes and public gathering points in the security plan is intended to safeguard commuters and worshippers alike during the festive period.

Disu further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines. Authorities maintain that public cooperation remains essential to the success of nationwide security operations, particularly during periods of increased social and economic activity.

This nationwide deployment aligns with broader efforts by security agencies to adopt preventive and intelligence-driven approaches to policing, especially during high-traffic national events such as religious celebrations.
