The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised its timetable for the 2027 general elections, extending the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers to May 10, 2026.

The electoral body said the adjustment became necessary after political parties raised concerns over the initial submission window, which was earlier scheduled to run from April 1 to April 21, 2026.

According to INEC, the new deadline is designed to comply with the Electoral Act requirement that parties must submit their registers at least 21 days before conducting their primaries.

With the update, parties are now free to schedule their primaries within the approved period of April 23 to May 30, 2026.

In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission stressed the importance of strict adherence to the revised timetable.

INEC warned that compliance with the new schedule is crucial to maintaining a smooth and credible electoral process as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
