Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) School of Nursing, Nnewi, on Tuesday demonstrated against what they described as a “sudden and heavy” increase in tuition fees, highlighting growing financial pressures on nursing students in the South East.
The tuition, which rose from N90,000 to N580,000, sparked protests at the school gate, with students carrying placards calling for reconsideration of the new rates. Many students also voiced concerns over the high cost of private accommodation near the campus, adding to their financial strain.
In response, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Joseph Ugonna, assured that the institution is committed to dialogue. “Once I return to the institution, we will meet with the board members who proposed the tuition increase and the student union leadership to harmonize the fees and ensure fairness,” he said. Prof. Ugonna emphasized that the review was intended to enhance the quality of training, noting that NAUTH remains among the most affordable nursing schools in the South East.
Meanwhile, NAUTH Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Chinyere Onwuka, clarified that the official student union did not organize the protest. She explained that the new tuition covers meals and transportation for clinical postings in Enugu and that private hostel arrangements are separate from the school’s fees. She further compared the tuition with other nursing schools in the region, noting some institutions charge up to N800,000, excluding feeding.
Despite the assurances, students insist that the sharp increase presents a heavy financial burden, with many calling for a phased or moderated payment plan to reduce immediate pressure on families.
The management has pledged to engage with students and the board in the coming days to resolve the issue and restore calm on campus.
