The Niger Delta Development Commission has launched its 2026/2027 foreign postgraduate scholarship programme, offering qualified graduates from the Niger Delta a pathway to advanced education in international institutions.

The initiative, announced by the commission, is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen human capital development and enhance global competitiveness among youths in the oil-rich region.

Applications for the programme opened on March 23, 2026, and will close on April 19, 2026, with candidates required to complete their submissions through the commission’s official portal.

Beyond its educational value, the scholarship is strategically designed to equip beneficiaries with specialized skills aligned with Nigeria’s local content priorities, particularly in sectors critical to national development.

To qualify, applicants must possess a minimum of second-class upper division in their undergraduate studies and be under the age of 40. In addition, candidates are expected to secure admission into a recognized overseas university prior to application—an indication of the programme’s competitive nature.

The selection process reflects a multi-layered screening system aimed at ensuring merit and regional representation. Initial shortlisting will consider academic performance and local government identification, followed by a computer-based test to be conducted in Rivers State.

Only candidates who meet the required performance threshold will proceed to further verification stages involving community and local government endorsements.

Education analysts note that international scholarship opportunities remain highly sought after among Nigerian graduates, particularly in the face of rising tuition costs and limited local postgraduate funding options.

Westbridge reports that the NDDC programme stands out as a critical intervention, not only expanding access to global education but also fostering a new generation of skilled professionals expected to contribute to both regional and national development.
