The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party has outlined a strategic direction aimed at strengthening its internal structure and positioning the party for future electoral contests, with zoning and membership reforms taking center stage.

At its 107th NEC meeting held in Abuja, the party resolved that its longstanding zoning principle will serve as the framework for the forthcoming National Convention—an approach party leaders say reinforces internal balance, inclusiveness, and stability.

The decision reflects a broader effort by the party to consolidate its organizational base following recent internal challenges. By reaffirming zoning, the PDP signals continuity in its power-sharing arrangement, widely regarded as a key mechanism for managing diversity within its ranks.

The meeting, chaired under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, also reviewed the party’s nationwide congresses, describing the processes as largely peaceful and credible.

Beyond structural alignment, NEC placed significant emphasis on its ongoing electronic membership registration exercise, highlighting it as a cornerstone of the party’s modernization agenda. The initiative is expected to deliver a more reliable and data-driven membership system, potentially improving mobilization and electoral coordination.

Party officials expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far and encouraged wider participation, underscoring the importance of an accurate membership database in strengthening grassroots engagement.

Meanwhile, the commencement of nomination form sales for the National Convention marks a critical step in the party’s transition process. Aspirants have been urged to adhere strictly to established guidelines and timelines, as the PDP moves to ensure a transparent and credible exercise.

Framed under the theme “A Convention of Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal,” the upcoming gathering is expected to serve as a defining moment for the party’s internal cohesion and future direction.

Observers note that the combined focus on zoning and digital membership reform suggests a deliberate attempt by the PDP to rebuild institutional confidence and reposition itself within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Westbridge reports that as preparations intensify, the success of these reforms may play a decisive role in shaping the party’s competitiveness in subsequent electoral cycles.
