The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full investigation following the arrest of a man identified as Mr Abuchi over the alleged killing of his wife in Amaji village, Umuoyoro Community, Omuma Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, has left residents of the agrarian community in shock and mourning.
Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a telephone conversation, stating that the suspect is currently in custody and that the Commissioner of Police has directed a comprehensive probe to ensure justice is served.
According to available information, the couple had reportedly gone to their farm in Amaji village when an altercation allegedly broke out between them. Although the exact circumstances surrounding the dispute remain unclear, sources within the community said the woman’s cries for help drew the attention of nearby villagers.
Residents working in surrounding farmlands reportedly rushed to the scene after hearing loud screams. They were said to have restrained the suspect before alerting authorities. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Eberi Police Division in Omuma for further investigation.
Community members described the development as devastating, noting that the deceased, a mother of two, was well known in the area. Many residents expressed disbelief over the incident, saying they were struggling to understand what might have triggered the confrontation.
A security source familiar with preliminary findings disclosed that the suspect allegedly told investigators he was unable to explain what came over him at the time of the incident. Police authorities, however, have maintained that a detailed investigation is underway to establish the full facts.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign condemned the incident and called for a thorough and transparent investigation. The group’s National Coordinator, Prince Wiro, described the act as deeply troubling and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability in accordance with the law.
As investigations continue, the case has reignited conversations around domestic conflicts and the need for peaceful dispute resolution within families, particularly in rural communities.
The police have assured residents that due process will be followed and that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
