The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the payment of outstanding pension arrears owed by state governments across the country.
The union made the call while congratulating the President on his 74th birthday, acknowledging his administration’s efforts to improve pensioners’ welfare at the federal level.
In a statement signed by its National President, Godwin Abumisi, the union commended recent reforms, including the approval of a ₦32,000 pension increase and the release of funds to clear longstanding liabilities.
According to NUP, these measures have brought relief to many retirees and restored confidence in the system. It also praised the consistent payment of monthly pensions and government efforts to address delays.
However, the union expressed concern that many pensioners at the state level have yet to benefit from similar improvements, with arrears and unpaid entitlements still widespread.
NUP urged the President to engage state governors to ensure the full implementation of approved pension increases nationwide, stressing that retirees at all levels deserve equal treatment.
The union also called for the speedy rollout of a health insurance scheme for pensioners, describing it as essential to improving their wellbeing.
It expressed optimism that further intervention would help address existing gaps and strengthen social protection for retirees across Nigeria.
