The Igbo Community Assembly in Abuja has called on Nigerians and social media users to exercise caution and verify information before sharing content online, following a viral video that implicated prominent business figures in alleged disputes.
At a press briefing, Chief Ositadimma Nwoye, Chairman of the Assembly, emphasised the need for responsible public discourse, warning that unverified claims could damage reputations and heighten social tensions.
The video in question, circulated widely on social media by activist Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, alleged irregularities in a business transaction involving Chief Austin Oguejiofor, CEO of First Rotech Group.
Addressing the allegations, the Assembly highlighted that Chief Oguejiofor has built a long-standing reputation in the real estate sector and has contributed to numerous organisations, including Ohanaeze Youth Worldwide and the Anambra State Associations in Europe and Turkey.
The group also clarified references to petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, stating that prior filings had been withdrawn, contradicting claims in the video that suggested misconduct by the agency.
“Our concern is not only with the content but also with the way respected community leaders were referenced,” said Chief Nwoye. “Social media users must remember that spreading incomplete or misleading information can have real-world consequences.”
The Assembly urged parties involved in business disputes to pursue lawful and formal channels, including courts or legally recognised dispute resolution mechanisms, rather than relying on social media narratives.
Finally, the Assembly appealed to social media commentators to practice due diligence, urging Nigerians to promote fairness, accountability, and respect for community institutions in online discussions.
