A former National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Salimon Oladiti, has been elected as the new President of the union.

Oladiti emerged victorious on Friday during the union’s 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference, which is currently ongoing in Lagos. His election marks a new leadership phase for one of Nigeria’s most influential labour unions in the oil and gas sector.

The conference brought together delegates from across the country representing various branches of the union to deliberate on key industry issues, internal reforms, and the future direction of workers’ welfare and representation within the petroleum sector.

In the same election exercise, a former Chairman of the Oil and Gas Supply branch, Akin Oladejo, was elected as the Deputy President of the union. His emergence alongside Oladiti is expected to strengthen the leadership structure of the union as it navigates ongoing challenges in the energy and labour environment.

The newly elected executives are expected to take over responsibilities focused on protecting workers’ rights, engaging stakeholders in the oil and gas industry, and addressing concerns affecting members across different sectors of the union.

Delegates at the conference expressed optimism that the new leadership will bring unity, stability, and renewed focus to the union’s activities, especially at a time when the petroleum industry continues to face regulatory changes, economic pressures, and labour-related negotiations.

The election process was described as peaceful and transparent, with delegates participating actively in selecting the new leadership team.

With this development, attention now shifts to how the new leadership will implement its agenda and respond to pressing issues affecting workers in Nigeria’s critical oil and gas sector.
